News Editor

Editorial · İstanbul· Ofis · Tam zamanlı

Aposto is an independent media company. We publish newsletters, a website, a mobile app, and a print paper, we produce video, and we run events. Our editorial philosophy is simple: gürültüden uzaklaş. Stay away from the noise. Everything we make is built on the idea that people want less, chosen better.

We are hiring a News Editor to run Gündem, our daily news brief.

The role

Every morning, a few hundred thousand people open Gündem before they open anything else. Your job is to decide what they read. Not everything that happened, the part that matters, explained in a way that a smart person who does not follow the news for a living can read in ten minutes and feel done.

That is a harder job than it sounds. Turkish news is loud, fast, and mostly about the argument rather than the event. The editor of Gündem has to see through that every day: know what actually changed, what is noise dressed as news, and what will still matter next week. Then write it, or edit it, so that it reads as a calm, complete account rather than a pile of headlines.

Concretely, you will:

  • Own the daily edition end to end. Selection, structure, writing, editing, and the send. Gündem goes out every morning, and it goes out because you decided it was ready
  • Set the running order. Which story leads, which stories go in a line, which stories we leave out on purpose. Leaving things out is most of the job
  • Write clearly. Short sentences, plain Turkish, no cliché, no borrowed drama. We explain things the way you would to a friend who is sharp but busy
  • Edit the contributions of writers and correspondents to one voice without flattening them
  • Run the morning desk: source monitoring, verification, fact checks, and knowing when a story is confirmed and when it is only trending
  • Coordinate with the other verticals so that Gündem and Pareto are not telling the same story twice, and so that a story that belongs in Quando or Soli goes there with a pointer rather than being half told in both
  • Feed the rest of the house. The print paper, the app, social, and video all draw on what the news desk knows. You are the person they ask
  • Keep the archive honest. Corrections are published, clearly, the same day

What we're looking for

  • Five or more years in news, in a newsroom, a wire, a broadcaster, or a digital publisher, with real time spent on a daily desk. You have sent things out under a clock
  • Exceptional Turkish prose. This is not negotiable. Send us something you wrote, not something you edited
  • News judgement you can explain. When we ask why a story led, we want a reason, not an instinct dressed as one
  • Working English. Enough to read the FT, Reuters, and a central bank statement quickly and know what they mean
  • Range. Politics, the economy, the courts, foreign affairs, and the story that does not fit any of those. You do not need to be an expert in each, but you need to be able to tell when someone else is wrong
  • Composure. Mornings on a news desk are not calm. The edition still has to read as if they were
  • A view on what Turkish news gets wrong and what a daily brief should be instead

Nice to have

  • Economics or markets literacy beyond the headline number
  • Experience running or launching a newsletter, and a feel for what open rates and reply mail actually tell you
  • Editing experience with correspondents or freelancers
  • Newsroom systems and tools, and opinions about them
  • A second language beyond Turkish and English
