Managing Editor (News)

Editorial · İstanbul· Ofis · Tam zamanlı

Aposto News is where Aposto covers what's happening in Türkiye and the world. At its center is Gündem, the newsletter people open to understand the day without drowning in it. Around it sit our news coverage on the website, app and social channels, and Angst, our corner for opinion.

Our editorial line has always been the same: gürültüden uzaklaş. Stay away from the noise. In news, that is the hardest promise to keep. Every day there is pressure to be first, to be loudest, to cover everything. Our job is to be right, to be clear, and to tell readers what actually matters and why.

We're looking for the person who manages Aposto News day to day. With our Editor-in-Chief, you'll decide what we cover and how, hold every piece to a standard of accuracy and fairness, and build the team and the network of writers who make it worth reading.

What you'll own

Gündem. The daily newsletter is the flagship of Aposto News, and you're accountable for every issue. You'll set the agenda each day, decide what leads, what gets a line and what gets left out, and make sure the issue that lands in a reader's inbox is accurate, calm and complete. You'll work with the editors who build it, and you'll be the last read before it goes.

News content management and socials. Website, app, social and video: wherever Aposto covers the news, we need you to give guidance.

Standards. Verification, sourcing, corrections, the line between news and opinion, and how we handle stories we can't yet confirm. You'll own these rules, write down the ones that aren't written yet, and make sure the team actually follows them. That also means judgment risks: knowing when a story needs a second look, or more time.

Breaking news. When something big happens, you decide how Aposto responds: what we say, when, on which channels, and what we wait on. You'll set up the way the desk works on those days so it doesn't depend on improvisation.

Writers and contributors. Columnists, correspondents, freelancers and experts. You'll have a central responsibility coordinating our communication with our contributors.

The desk. You'll lead the editors and reporters working on news, set priorities, give honest notes and develop people. You'll read the numbers (opens, retention, reach) and know which ones to act on and which to ignore.

Who we're looking for

  • You've worked in a newsroom and run a desk, a section or a daily product, with real responsibility for what got published.
  • You have sharp news judgment and you can explain it: why this story leads, why that one waits.
  • You care about accuracy more than speed, and you know how to be fast anyway.
  • You know Turkish politics, economy and society well, and you follow the world closely. You understand the legal and political environment Turkish journalism works in.
  • You're calm under pressure. On a heavy news day, the desk takes its temperature from you.
  • You know writers and sources across the spectrum, and you can work with people you disagree with.
  • You've managed people before. You can direct someone's work without taking the pen from them.
  • You write and edit beautifully in Turkish. Strong English is a plus.

What this role isn't

It isn't a chase for clicks, and it isn't a coordination job. You won't measure success by how many stories we publish, and you won't be passing tasks between people. You'll be the judgment at the centre of Aposto News.
